Eligibility

Before you begin your application, make sure you meet our admission criteria

NDS Program Eligibility

Students that were previously admitted to and enrolled in a degree-seeking program at NC State and wish to readmit into that program are not eligible for NDS. Please visit the Readmission into degree-seeking programs website for more information.

See information below regarding eligibility details depending on your current classification status. All prospective NDS students will complete the online ApplyNDS application, and the application requirements may vary based on your prior enrollment as an NC State and/or NDS student as well as your current state of residence and education level.

New and Returning Students

New to NC State

Students that have never attended NC State, as an NDS student or otherwise, must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must have graduated from high school at least one year prior to when NDS enrollment will begin, OR
  • Must be a current high school student applying to AEO program (see below)
  • Must be eligible to return to any previously-attended institutions, if applicable

Returning to NC State

New to NDS

Students that were previously enrolled at NC State, but have never enrolled in NDS, must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be eligible to return to NC State and any other previously-attended institutions

Returning to NDS

Students that were previously enrolled as NDS students at NC State must meet the following criteria to re-apply for NDS:

  • Must be eligible to return to NC State and any other previously-attended institutions
  • Must not have completed more than 30 credit hours as an NDS student

*Returning NDS students may not need to re-apply if you have been continuously enrolled in consecutive fall and spring semesters. If you have any questions about if or how you should apply, please contact the NDS program coordinators at nondegreestudies@ncsu.edu.

Current High School Students

The Academic Enrichment Opportunities Program (AEO) is available for current high school students that meet certain criteria:

  • Must have exhausted all course options available at your high school
  • Cumulative weighted GPA of 3.5 or higher. Transcripts and standardized test scores (e.g. SAT, ACT) consistent with students entering the university’s freshman class may be required.
  • Junior or senior standing, or rising junior or senior
  • Must receive written permission from their school principal; details are included within the online application
  • On track to graduate on time

Senior Auditors (65+)

The Senior Auditors (65+) program is available for senior residents to audit courses. Students admitted to the 65+ program are eligible to have tuition waived upon request, and the $40 application fee is also waived for 65+ applicants.

  • Residents of North Carolina
  • Aged 65 or older (65+)
  • Must be in good standing with the university
  • Must not have any financial holds on any institutional accounts

Once admitted and registered Senior Auditors must return a completed 65+ Waiver Form to the Department of Registration and Records to have the course adjusted to audit and tuition waived.

Inter-Institutional and Cooperating Raleigh Colleges Programs

The Inter-Institutional (II) and Cooperating Raleigh Colleges (CRC) programs are independent programs from NDS at NC State and require separate application and admissions procedures. Students wishing to participate in II or CRC should not apply to NDS at NC State.

Visiting degree-seeking students from the following participating schools wishing to enroll in classes at NC State should visit our Cooperating Raleigh Colleges Program website for more information:

  • Meredith College
  • Shaw University
  • St. Augustine’s University
  • Wake Technical Community College
  • William Peace University
